OVERVIEW
Our mission is to catalyze innovations that solve global problems and improve the lives of the world’s poorest people. We do this by incubating products, advocating for important causes, engaging with global organizations, and managing venture investments.
Exemplars in Global Health (“EGH”) identifies positive global health outliers, studies successes, and shares findings so that lessons can be adapted in comparable settings to improve health across the world. Our goals are to produce high quality research to drive improvements in how policy makers and funders deal with the most pressing global health challenges.
Gates Ventures is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
THE POSITION
A successful candidate will be excited to drive the end-to-end success of our research on best practices in the COVID-19 response, pandemic preparedness, and health systems resilience.
This role will work to (1) shape and contribute to the research that we are undertaking in partnership with academic researchers, (2) guide that research through a translation and publication process, so it is accessible to a broader audience, with the help of journalists, designers and web developers, and (3) support engagement with external stakeholders (e.g. health ministries, multilateral institutions, funders, technical advisors) to bridge the know-do gap from research to policy impact.
Ultimately, we seek to create a compelling research product that will support policy makers, funders, advocates, and academics to improve the quality of global health decisions.
You are the ideal candidate if you are:
- A strong problem solver: You can break down problems using structure and logic and find a smart solution that fits with the bigger picture.
- An efficient and diligent researcher: You can scour published resources and quickly gain an understanding of “the story” and key takeaways around what you’re researching.
- Data-driven and analytical: You believe that anything worth doing is worth measuring, and love using data to drive insights. You are driven by intellectual curiosity.
- Flexible: You can juggle multiple tasks and priorities and thrive in environments with ambiguity and rapid change. You are just as comfortable engaging with high-level stakeholders as you are scheduling meetings and analyzing data sets.
- A strong and concise communicator: You can quickly and effectively communicate your ideas verbally and in writing.
- Able to work with diverse stakeholders: You are able to understand the working styles and needs of a wide variety of stakeholders from around the world and adapt effectively (e.g., academics, government, funders, executives, creative designers).
RESPONSIBILITIES
The individual taking on this important role will be responsible for a wide range of activities and relationships, including but not limited to:
- Global health research and project coordination (50%): Work closely with subject matter experts, academic partners, and external stakeholders to shape and drive global health research related to the COVID-19 response, pandemic preparedness, and health systems resilience. Responsibilities will include conducting scientific literature reviews and analysis, deep dives on specific policy or content bodies of work, and supporting general project and editorial process management.
- Plan and track key partner engagements (25%): Manage communications and materials development for key external engagements and meetings, as well as supporting new partnership identification, communication, tracking and dissemination strategies.
- Data and analytics (15%): Lead rapid data and analytics workstreams in partnership with leading academics and to answer policy and strategy questions for internal and external decision-makers.
- Special projects (10%): Support high-priority efforts as opportunities arise.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 2-4+ years in an analytically and programmatically rigorous environment – global health strategy, policy, advocacy, management consulting, data and analytics, or research
- Familiarity with dynamics of the global health ecosystem through past work and/or educational background in public health
- Strong communication skills, including strong writing, presentations, and ability to efficiently synthesize materials
- Proven analytical capability, including significant experience analyzing large data sets in Excel, Stata, R, or similar software
- Track record of increasing responsibility and cultivating strong relationships with partner organizations
- Experience organizing and driving complex projects while effectively balancing multiple priorities on tight timelines
